President Alvi approves reconstitution of Council of Common Interests – Pakistan

President Dr Arif Alvi on Friday approved the reorganization of the CCI, which will be led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

A statement issued by the President of the House today stated that Dr Alvi had re-established the council on the advice of the prime minister under Article 153 of the Constitution.

The law stipulates that four prime ministers and an equal number of members from the federal government will be appointed by the prime minister from time to time to serve on the board.

In addition to the prime minister as chairman, other councilors include four provincial prime ministers and three nominees for the federal government – Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Commerce Minister Naveed Qamar and Minister of Air and Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, the report added.

In terms of the Constitution, the CCI is responsible for formulating and managing policies in relation to matters covered in the federal laws and to exercise oversight and governance in related institutions.

“The council will be formed within 30 days after the prime minister swears the office,” he said, adding that the CCI should meet once every 90 days. However, in the event of an emergency, the PM may convene an emergency meeting at the request of the provinces.

Council decisions are taken on the basis of a majority.
